You will find UK listings claiming the BMW 225xe charges in about two hours on a 7 kW wallbox. That is arithmetically impossible, because the 225xe has a 3.7 kW single phase onboard charger. BMW confirmed the figure in writing when it launched the replacement, noting that maximum charging capacity was going up from 3.7 kW to 7.4 kW on the new car. The number matters commercially, because it means the cheapest cable we sell is the right one for this car and anything dearer is money spent on capability the 225xe cannot use. Every BMW 225xe Active Tourer uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. BMW puts the socket under a separate flap on the front left wing, ahead of the driver's door, and the car has no DC rapid charging at all, so a Type 2 cable is the only way to charge it anywhere. Buy the 16A version. At 3.7 kW the car is already at its ceiling on a 16A lead, so the 32A single phase cable charges it no faster and the 22 kW three phase cable is money wasted twice over: the 225xe cannot use three phases, and a British house cannot supply them. This is one of the few pages on this site where we will tell you plainly not to buy the more expensive cable. The battery changed during the car's life and the charger did not. Cars up to 2019 carry 7.6 kWh gross, sometimes quoted as 7.7, of which 5.8 kWh is usable. From August 2019 the pack grew to 10.0 kWh gross and 8.8 kWh usable. Owners often ask how to tell which one they have, and for cable purposes the reassuring answer is that it does not matter, because both charge at 3.7 kW and both take the same lead. A domestic socket lead is genuinely practical on a battery this small. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable draws 2.3 kW from an ordinary 13 amp outlet and fills the later 225xe in about 4 hours 15 minutes, or the earlier car in 2 hours 45 minutes. That is a complete overnight charge from a normal socket, which makes it a real second method rather than a fallback. Our guide explains what a household socket delivers. If your car is the newer 2 Series Active Tourer plug-in hybrid, badged 225e xDrive or 230e and sold from 2022, none of these figures apply. That car has a 7.4 kW charger and a 16.3 kWh battery, so it wants the 32A single phase cable instead. Other BMW plug-in hybrids are covered on the BMW 330e charging cable page, and everything for the marque is listed in BMW EV charging cables. All of our leads are built to IEC 62196 Type 2 with CE certification, rated from -30C to +50C, or +60C for the 3-pin. The Type 2 to Type 2 cables are sealed to IP55 and the Type 2 to 3-Pin to IP67. Every one carries a 2 year manufacturer's warranty, with free next working day UK delivery. Our IP ratings guide explains what those sealing figures keep out. The facelift in autumn 2018 and the battery change in August 2019 were separate events, which means a 2018 facelifted car still has the smaller pack. Cold weather cuts the miles per hour on either version. BMW 225xe Charging Cable FAQs What charging cable does a BMW 225xe need? A BMW 225xe needs a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, and the 16A version is all it can use. The car's onboard charger is limited to 3.7 kW, so a 32A cable delivers exactly the same speed for more money. Can a BMW 225xe charge at 7kW? No, and this is the most common mistake made about this car. Several UK listings quote a two hour charge on a 7 kW wallbox, which cannot happen on a 3.7 kW onboard charger. BMW itself put the figure on record when it launched the successor, describing the increase from 3.7 kW to 7.4 kW as a change. Does the bigger battery charge any faster? No. The 2019 upgrade from 7.6 kWh to 10.0 kWh left the 3.7 kW charger untouched, so the larger battery simply takes longer, about 2 hours 45 minutes rather than 1 hour 45 minutes. Both take the same cable, which is why you do not need to identify your battery before ordering. Is the 22kW three phase cable worth it on a BMW 225xe? No, for two separate reasons. The 225xe cannot draw more than 3.7 kW from any supply, and a British house provides a single phase in any case. There is no site anywhere in the country where that cable would charge this car faster than the 16A one. Can I charge a BMW 225xe from a three pin socket? Yes, and on this car it works properly. A 3-pin lead fills the later 10.0 kWh battery in about 4 hours 15 minutes and the earlier one in 2 hours 45 minutes, so an ordinary household socket gives you a complete charge overnight with hours to spare. What length of cable does a BMW 225xe need? The flap is on the front left wing of a car about 4.35 metres long, so 5m reaches when the wallbox is towards the front of the drive on the passenger side. Park nose out, or mount the unit at the far end, and the lead has to come round the car, which is where the 10m earns its place.

An AC charging cable for the BMW 330e and 330e xDrive, Saloon and Touring, covering the 12 kWh cars built from 2019 to mid 2024 and the 19.5 kWh cars built from July 2024. Both use a Type 2 inlet, so a Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits either car, and a Type 2 to 3-Pin cable is stocked as a backup lead. The 2019 to 2024 car accepts a maximum of 3.7kW, single phase only; the July 2024 on car accepts up to 11kW on three phase and 7.4kW on single phase. A UK home supply is single phase, so a car draws at most 7.4kW at home, and the 32A single phase cable delivers that in full. Lengths are 5, 10, 15 and 20 metres, with 15 and 20 metres made in the 32A rating only. Built to IEC 62196-2 and CE certified, IP55 sealed, rated from -30C to +50C, or +60C for the 3-pin. Two year manufacturer's warranty and free next working day UK delivery.

A charging cable for the BMW 530e, covering every version sold in the UK since 2017. All of them charge through a Type 2 inlet and take a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The 2017 to 2019 530e iPerformance saloon and the 2019 to 2023 530e and 530e xDrive saloon and Touring accept 3.7 kW on single phase. The 2024 onwards G60 saloon and G61 Touring accept 7.4 kW on single phase, and cars built from November 2024 accept 11 kW on three phase. A UK home supply is single phase, so the car draws at most 7.4 kW at home, and the 32A single phase cable delivers that in full on a G60, or the 3.7 kW ceiling of the earlier cars. Lengths are 5, 10, 15 and 20 metres, the 15 and 20 metre leads in 32A single phase only. Built to IEC 62196-2 and CE certified, IP55 sealed, rated from -30C to +50C, or +60C for the 3-pin. BMW 740e Charging Cable

The BMW 740e takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and the 16A version is the one we recommend. This is a plug-in hybrid with a 9.2 kWh battery, so the pack is small and there is nothing for a bigger cable to do. Save the money and put it towards a second cable for the boot. Two plug-in 7 Series were sold in the UK. The 740e, 740Le and 740Le xDrive iPerformance ran from 2016 to 2019 with a 9.2 kWh battery. The 745e, 745Le and 745Le xDrive replaced them from 2019 to 2022 and carry 12 kWh. Both use the same Type 2 inlet, so one cable covers either car and the badge only changes how long a full charge takes. BMW never published an AC charge rate for these cars, so we will not quote one. What we can tell you is what the pack does in practice. The 12 kWh 745e refills in roughly 3 hours 20 minutes on a 7 kW wallbox, and the smaller 9.2 kWh 740e finishes overnight on any wallbox you plug it into. That 745e figure is the useful clue: it works out well below what a 32A cable can carry, which means the car, not the cable, is setting the pace. A dearer cable will not shorten it. So skip the 32A single phase cable and skip the three phase one too. A UK home is single phase and stops at 7.4 kW anyway, and neither car can use even that. The 16A cable at 3.7 kW is matched to the job, and it is lighter and easier to coil into a 7 Series boot. A Type 2 to 3 Pin cable is a sensible second buy here rather than a first one. At 2.3 kW it puts the 9.2 kWh pack back in about four and a half hours and the 12 kWh pack in about six, which is fine for an occasional overnight fill at a friend's house or a hotel with no charge point. For length, five metres works next to a wallbox and ten metres is the safer pick if you park nose out or use public posts. Type 2 to Type 2 cables are IP55 rated, Type 2 to 3 Pin cables are IP67, and every cable ships with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty and free next working day UK delivery. BMW 740e Charging Times 740e, 740Le and 740Le xDrive iPerformance, 2016 to 2019, 9.2 kWh battery Cable Type Max Charge Rate Empty to Full Verdict Type 2 to 3 Pin (5m / 10m) 2.3 kW 4h 30m Genuinely usable on a pack this size Type 2 to Type 2, 16A (5m / 10m) 3.7 kW Overnight on any wallbox Best choice Type 2 to Type 2, 32A (5m / 10m) 7.4 kW Overnight on any wallbox Costs more, no gain Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase (5m / 10m) 22 kW Overnight on any wallbox No benefit on this car 745e, 745Le and 745Le xDrive, 2019 to 2022, 12 kWh battery Cable Type Max Charge Rate Empty to Full Verdict Type 2 to 3 Pin (5m / 10m) 2.3 kW 6h 00m Fine for an overnight away from home Type 2 to Type 2, 16A (5m / 10m) 3.7 kW About 3h 20m Best choice Type 2 to Type 2, 32A (5m / 10m) 7.4 kW About 3h 20m The car sets the pace, not the cable Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase (5m / 10m) 22 kW About 3h 20m No benefit on this car BMW 740e Charging Cable FAQs What cable does a BMW 740e use? A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and 16A is plenty. The 740e carries a 9.2 kWh battery and the later 745e carries 12 kWh, both small enough that a 3.7 kW cable empties the job overnight. The same cable fits every 7 Series plug-in hybrid built from 2016 to 2022. Will a 32A cable charge my 740e faster? No. The 745e refills in roughly 3 hours 20 minutes on a 7 kW wallbox, which is far less than a 32A cable can carry, so the onboard charger is the limit rather than the lead. Paying for 32A buys you a heavier cable and the same finish time on both cars. How long does a BMW 745e take to charge? About 3 hours 20 minutes from empty on a 7 kW wallbox for the 12 kWh pack. On a Type 2 to 3 Pin cable at 2.3 kW it stretches to around 6 hours. The earlier 9.2 kWh 740e needs about 4 hours 30 minutes on 3 pin and finishes overnight on any wallbox. What is the difference between the 740e and 745e? Model years and battery size. The 740e, 740Le and 740Le xDrive iPerformance ran from 2016 to 2019 with 9.2 kWh. The 745e, 745Le and 745Le xDrive took over from 2019 to 2022 with 12 kWh. Both use a Type 2 inlet, so one cable serves both and only the charge time changes. Does a BMW 740i or 740d need a charging cable? No. The 730d, 740d, 740i and 750i have no battery pack and no charging port, so nothing on this page fits them. Only the 740e and 745e badges plug in. If you are after the all electric 7 Series, that is the i7 and it has its own page on our site. Is 5m or 10m better for a 7 Series? Five metres is enough when the wallbox is on the same side as the car and within a couple of paces. Ten metres suits a long driveway, a car parked nose out, or public posts where you cannot choose your bay. A 7 Series boot swallows either length without complaint.

    BMW i3 EV Charging Cable

A BMW i3 charging cable has to suit an onboard AC charger rated at 7.4 kW, which is what BMW fitted to UK cars across all three battery generations. That is worth stating plainly, because the i3 is one of the few cars where what BMW advertised in Europe and what arrived in Britain are not the same thing. When the 94 Ah car launched in 2016 BMW described its charging as multi-phase, capable of 3.7, 7.4 or 11 kW. That 11 kW figure is three separate 3.7 kW modules working together, and it is where the idea of an 11 kW i3 comes from. A car with that three-phase unit plugged into a single-phase British supply charges at only 3.7 kW, because just one of the three modules has anything to draw from. UK supplied cars got the 7.4 kW single-phase charger instead, which is twice as fast at a house. So if your i3 sits at 3.7 kW on a 7 kW wallbox, it is very probably not faulty and not the cable. It is more likely a car built for a market with three-phase housing. A 32A cable will not change that, and neither will anything else you can buy. Every BMW i3 and i3 REx uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, IP55 sealed on ours. Type 1 was fitted only to North American cars and never here, whatever the age of the car. For a UK car our 1-Phase, 32A cable is the right buy. It carries the full 7.4 kW and fills the final 42.2 kWh car in about 5 hours 45 minutes, the 33 kWh car in 4 hours 15 minutes and the original 22 kWh car in 2 hours 45 minutes. The 16A cable halves the rate to 3.7 kW and roughly doubles all three, which on a car with this little battery is a real daily cost. Skip the 22 kW three-phase cable. A UK i3 has a single-phase charger, so the extra phases have nothing to connect to at a house or anywhere else. The small battery makes our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable more useful here than on most electric cars. It is IP67 sealed, takes 2.3 kW and fills the 22 kWh car in about 9 hours 15 minutes, so an early i3 can genuinely be run from a household socket. Our note on charging from a household socket covers where that stops working. One point on the range extender: the i3 REx was withdrawn in Europe in October 2018, just before the 120 Ah battery arrived, so there is no UK 42.2 kWh i3 REx. A British range extender car will be a 60 Ah or 94 Ah model. BMW's later electric cars charge very differently. The BMW iX1 and the BMW i4 have their own pages, and the BMW charging cable range covers everything. Our IP ratings guide explains the sealing figures. Every cable is CE certified, built to IEC 62196 Type 2, rated from -30C to +50C, or +60C for the 3-pin, and comes with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty and free next working day UK delivery. The 60 Ah and 94 Ah cars predate WLTP in the UK, so their range numbers come from the older NEDC cycle and read optimistically, which also makes their miles per hour figures look high. Winter and motorway pace both cut them further. BMW i3 Charging Cable FAQs What cable does a BMW i3 use? The BMW i3 charges through Type 2 at both ends, on every model year and including the REx. For home use the 32A rating is the one to choose, since a UK i3 accepts 7.4 kW and that cable delivers all of it. Why does my BMW i3 only charge at 3.7kW? Almost certainly because it has the three-phase onboard charger fitted to cars built for markets with three-phase housing. That unit is three 3.7 kW modules, and a single-phase British supply can feed only one of them. A UK supplied BMW i3 has a 7.4 kW single-phase charger instead. No cable can change which unit is in the car. Is a 22kW cable any use on a BMW i3? No. A UK BMW i3 has a single-phase onboard charger, so the extra phases in a 22 kW cable have nothing to connect to, at home or anywhere else. It costs more than the 32A single-phase cable and charges the car at exactly the same speed. Was the i3 REx sold with the 42.2kWh battery? Not in the UK. BMW withdrew the range extender from Europe in October 2018, immediately before the 120 Ah battery arrived, so a British BMW i3 REx will have either the 60 Ah or the 94 Ah pack. The 42.2 kWh REx was a North American car. Can a BMW i3 run on a three-pin cable? An early one genuinely can. A Type 2 to 3-Pin cable gives the BMW i3 2.3 kW, which fills the original 22 kWh battery in about 9 hours 15 minutes, comfortably inside a night. On the 42.2 kWh car it takes over 18 hours, so there it is a backup rather than a plan. What cable length does a BMW i3 need? 5m is usually plenty. The i3 is under four metres long and takes up very little driveway, and the charging flap sits on the rear offside where it is easy to reach from most wall unit positions. Choose 10m if the i3 lives on the street, or if it is parked behind a larger car and cannot get close to the wall.

    BMW i5 EV Charging Cable

The BMW i5 charging cable you need is decided by one number: the i5 accepts 11 kW on AC as standard, and 22 kW if the car was built with AC Professional Charging. Both are three phase figures. Every i5 carries the same 81.2 kWh usable battery, eDrive40 and M60 xDrive alike, so the version you own changes the range on offer but never the rate the car will take. Every BMW i5 uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. There is no Type 1 version of this car and no adapter is needed at a public post or a home wallbox. That 22 kW figure is the one owners ask about, because many i5s have it. AC Professional Charging is standard on the M60 xDrive and on the eDrive40 Sport Edition, and was a cost option on the other eDrive40 trims. It gives the car a three phase charger. A domestic supply in Britain delivers a single phase, so two thirds of that capability has nothing to connect to on a driveway. Whether your i5 is an 11 kW car or a 22 kW car, a home wallbox hands it 7.4 kW, and a 32A single phase cable delivers that in full. The three phase cable earns its price only if you regularly use a three phase AC point at work or at a hotel, and on a 22 kW i5 it is genuinely quick there, 4 hours 15 minutes from empty against 12 hours 30 minutes at home. A 16A cable caps the car at 3.7 kW and roughly doubles every charge. On an eDrive40 that is 24 hours 45 minutes from empty instead of 12 hours 30 minutes, and about 17 miles put in per hour instead of 35. Across a seven hour overnight window the 32A cable returns around 245 miles and the 16A cable around 119. On a battery this size the cheaper cable costs you a usable amount of range every single night. A Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable is worth keeping in the boot even with a wallbox at home. It runs at 2.3 kW from any 13A socket, which is about 11 miles an hour on an i5, so it is a top up rather than a fill. It is the cable that gets you home from a cottage with no charge point, or covers you while a wallbox is out of action. If you are cross shopping the range, the BMW i4 uses the same cable at a lower AC rate, and the BMW 530e covers the plug in hybrid 5 Series. The full BMW EV charging cable range lists every model we stock cables for. A 2 year manufacturer's warranty comes with every cable we ship. The Type 2 to Type 2 carries an IP55 rating and the 3 Pin an IP67 one, both built to IEC 62196, both certified by CE, and both usable from -30C to +50C, or +60C for the 3-pin. We deliver free across the UK on the next working day. BMW i5 Charging Cable FAQs What charging cable does a BMW i5 need? A BMW i5 needs a Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable, and a 32A single phase version is the right choice for almost every owner. That matches the 7.4 kW a home wallbox can supply and fills the 81.2 kWh battery in about 12 hours 30 minutes. Lengths of 5m, 10m, 15m and 20m are available. Is the 22kW three-phase cable worth buying for an i5? Only if you regularly charge a BMW i5 on a three phase AC point, which usually means a workplace or a destination charger rather than home. A three phase supply is rare in British houses, so at home the car settles at 7.4 kW and the single phase cable delivers that for less money. Does the i5 M60 charge faster than the eDrive40? On AC, yes, but only where three phase is available. The BMW i5 M60 xDrive has the 22 kW charger as standard and reaches full in about 4 hours 15 minutes on a three phase supply, while a standard eDrive40 is limited to 11 kW. On a single phase home supply both cars charge at 7.4 kW and take the same 12 hours 30 minutes. How long a cable does a BMW i5 need? The BMW i5 has its charge port on the offside rear quarter panel and the Saloon is a little over 5 metres long, so the port sits well back from a wallbox mounted near the house if you drive in nose first. Owners who reverse onto the drive usually manage with 5m. Anyone parking nose in, or charging from a unit on the far side of a garage, is better served by 10m. Measure from the socket to where the rear wing actually sits before choosing. Can I use my own cable at a public charge point with an i5? Yes. Untethered public AC posts require you to bring a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and the same cable you use on a BMW i5 at home works at those posts. Rapid DC chargers have their own fixed cable and do not use it. How much range does an i5 gain in a seven hour cheap rate window? A BMW i5 eDrive40 on a 32A single phase cable adds roughly 245 miles across a seven hour off peak window, at about 35 miles for every hour plugged in. The same window on a 16A cable returns around 119 miles.

A BMW i7 charging cable has to move more energy than any other cable BMW owners buy from us. The i7 carries 101.7 kWh of usable battery and accepts up to 22 kW on AC, three phase, standard on cars built from 2023. The very first xDrive60 deliveries in late 2022 were quoted at 11 kW. Battery size does not vary across the eDrive50, xDrive60 and M70 xDrive, so the charging answer is the same for all three. Every BMW i7 uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The inlet on the offside rear combines the Type 2 AC connection with the DC pins, and the AC half is what a home or destination charger uses. The size of that battery is what makes the cable choice matter here. Paying for a three phase cable to use on a house supply buys nothing: the i7 will draw 7.4 kW from it and 7.4 kW from the single phase cable that costs less, because a British domestic feed carries one phase. What the battery does change is the cost of getting the cable wrong. A 32A single phase cable is the sensible home choice and takes the i7 from empty in about 15 hours 30 minutes, which is already two overnight windows rather than one. Step down to a 16A cable and the same job takes 31 hours. In practical terms that is around 14 miles put back per hour instead of 28, so a seven hour off peak window returns about 98 miles rather than 196. On a car with this much battery, a 16A cable never catches up with normal use and the saving disappears inside a month of charging. Because a full charge is a long job, most i7 owners top up rather than fill. That makes a Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable more useful than it first looks. At 2.3 kW it adds roughly 9 miles an hour, so an afternoon on a 13A socket at a relative's house is worth something, and it removes the risk of arriving somewhere with no working post. Other large BMWs in the range include the BMW i5 and the BMW iX, both of which take the same cable. You can see everything we stock on the BMW EV charging cable range. Our cables are built to IEC 62196, CE certified, and rated to run between -30C and +50C, or +60C for the 3-pin. The Type 2 to Type 2 cable is sealed to IP55 and the Type 2 to 3 Pin to IP67. A 2 year manufacturer's warranty covers every one, and UK delivery is free and next working day. BMW i7 Charging Times by Battery 101.7 kWh usable, i7 eDrive50 and xDrive60, WLTP up to 388 miles Maximum onboard AC charging speed: 22 kW three phase on cars from 2023, 11 kW on the earliest xDrive60 deliveries. BMW i7 Charging Cable FAQs Which cable fits a BMW i7? A BMW i7 takes a Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable, and the 32A single phase version suits nearly every owner. It carries the full 7.4 kW a domestic wallbox provides and refills the 101.7 kWh battery in about 15 hours 30 minutes. We stock it in 5m, 10m, 15m and 20m. Would a 22kW cable speed up a BMW i7 at home? No. A BMW i7 can accept 22 kW, but only from a three phase supply, and houses in Britain are fed with a single phase. At home the car takes 7.4 kW through either cable. The three phase cable is worth owning if a workplace or destination charger you use often runs three phase AC, where it cuts a full charge to about 5 hours 15 minutes. How long does a BMW i7 take to charge from empty? A BMW i7 takes roughly 15 hours 30 minutes from empty on a 7.4 kW home wallbox with a 32A single phase cable, and about 5 hours 15 minutes on a 22 kW three phase AC supply. Very few owners run the battery flat, so a nightly top up of 150 to 200 miles is the more useful number. What cable length suits a BMW i7? The BMW i7 is close to 5.4 metres long with the charge flap on the offside rear wing, so parking direction changes the answer more than it does on a smaller car. Reversing onto a drive with a wallbox by the house usually works with 5m, while nose in parking or a charger on the opposite wall of a garage points to 10m. It is worth measuring the actual run before ordering. Do I still need a cable if my i7 came with one? Many BMW i7 cars were supplied with a single phase cable, and it will not use the car's 22 kW three phase charger. It is also common for the supplied cable to be shorter than a driveway needs. A second cable in the boot means a public post is never a problem when the first one is plugged in at home. Is a 16A cable enough for a BMW i7? A 16A cable will charge a BMW i7 but it halves the rate to 3.7 kW, stretching a full charge to 31 hours and returning around 14 miles for each hour on the plug. On a battery of 101.7 kWh that difference shows up every night, so the 32A cable is the better buy.

    BMW i8 Charging Cable

The BMW i8 charges at 3.7 kW, and nothing you plug into it will change that number. The 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the right purchase, and on this car it is genuinely all you need. A 32A lead fits the same socket and is perfectly safe, but the i8 will still draw 3.7 kW from it, so the extra outlay only makes sense if a faster car is due to share the driveway.Every i8 sold in the UK and Europe uses a Type 2 socket. You will occasionally see the i8 listed with a Type 1 connector: that description belongs to the North American car and has never applied to a British one, in any model year. Trim level makes no difference to charging either, so there is no specification to look up before ordering.Battery size is the only meaningful split in the range. The 2014 to 2017 coupe carries 7.1 kWh gross, of which 5.2 kWh is usable, so a full charge is quick by any standard. From 2018 the coupe and the newly launched Roadster both moved to an 11.6 kWh pack with 9.4 kWh usable, which roughly doubles both the electric range and the time spent on the plug. BMW quotes that later car at under 3 hours from a wallbox and under 4 hours 30 minutes from a domestic three pin socket.Cable length is the one decision left, and on a car this low it catches people out more often than you would think. 5m is enough when the wallbox sits beside the parking bay and you always park the same way round. Choose 10m if the charge point is on the far wall of a garage, or if you leave the car at the kerb where it never faces the same direction twice. The longer lead costs a little more and saves a great deal of shuffling. The Type 2 to Type 2 cables here are IP55 rated. The Type 2 to 3 Pin lead is IP67 and delivers 2.3 kW, which suits an overnight top up away from home. Both come with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty and free next working day UK delivery.BMW i8 Charging Timesi8 Coupe, 2014 to 2017, 5.2 kWh usable Cable Type Max Charge Rate Empty to Full Verdict Type 2 to 3 Pin (5m / 10m) 2.3 kW 2h 30m Fine as a backup on this battery Type 2 to Type 2, 16A (5m / 10m) 3.7 kW 1h 30m Best fit, matches the car exactly Type 2 to Type 2, 32A (5m / 10m) 3.7 kW car limit 1h 30m Fits, but no faster Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase (5m / 10m) 3.7 kW car limit 1h 30m No benefit on an i8 i8 Coupe and i8 Roadster, 2018 to 2020, 9.4 kWh usable Cable Type Max Charge Rate Empty to Full Verdict Type 2 to 3 Pin (5m / 10m) 2.3 kW Under 4h 30m Workable overnight Type 2 to Type 2, 16A (5m / 10m) 3.7 kW Under 3h Best fit, BMW quoted figure Type 2 to Type 2, 32A (5m / 10m) 3.7 kW car limit Under 3h Same time, more cable Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase (5m / 10m) 3.7 kW car limit Under 3h Nothing to gain here BMW i8 Charging Cable FAQsWhich cable does the BMW i8 use?A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, in the 16A rating. The i8 has a 3.7 kW onboard charger, which a 16A lead matches precisely. On the 2014 to 2017 coupe that fills the 5.2 kWh usable battery in about 1 hour 30 minutes, and on the later 11.6 kWh cars BMW quotes under 3 hours. Is the i8 Type 1 or Type 2?Type 2, on every UK and European car, from the 2014 launch through to the last Roadster in 2020. Listings showing a Type 1 socket are describing the North American version. If your i8 was supplied here, a Type 2 to Type 2 lead is the correct fit and no adapter is needed. Is a 32A cable worth it on an i8?Not for the car itself. The i8 draws 3.7 kW regardless, so a 32A lead charges it in exactly the same time as a 16A one. The only reason to spend more is future proofing, if you expect a car with a 7.4 kW charger to use the same wallbox and the same cable later on.How long does the i8 take to charge? The 2014 to 2017 coupe holds 5.2 kWh usable and refills in roughly 1 hour 30 minutes on a 16A cable, or about 2 hours 30 minutes from a three pin socket. The 2018 cars hold 9.4 kWh usable, quoted by BMW at under 3 hours from a wallbox and under 4 hours 30 minutes on three pin.Does the Roadster charge like the coupe?Identically. The 2018 Roadster shares the 11.6 kWh pack, 9.4 kWh of it usable, the same Type 2 socket and the same 3.7 kW charger as the 2018 coupe. Order the 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for either body style, and pick your length by where the car parks rather than by model.Do I need 5m or 10m?Reach depends on how you park rather than on anything about the car. 5m is plenty for a wallbox beside a driveway bay when the i8 always sits the same way round. Take 10m for garage walls, kerbside charging, or any shared post you end up approaching from the far side of the bay.

    BMW iX Charging Cable

Delivered in 3-11 working days  Can't find what you're looking for? Contact us for availability.

A BMW iX charging cable has to move more energy than any other car we supply. The xDrive50 and the M60 carry 105.2 kWh usable, which is more than three Nissan Leafs, and every iX accepts 11 kW on AC as standard. That size changes the character of home charging. On a British single-phase supply, which gives 7.4 kW, a 105.2 kWh iX takes about 16 hours from empty. There is no cheap-rate window that long. It is the one car in our range where a three-phase supply stops being a nice extra and starts changing how you live with the vehicle, because it takes the same charge down to about 10 hours 45 minutes. In practice most iX owners never see an empty battery, and that is the sensible approach. Plugging in nightly from 40 or 50 percent turns a 16 hour problem into a 7 hour one that fits comfortably inside off-peak hours. The car is easier to own if you stop thinking about full charges. Every BMW iX charges through a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, ours sealed to IP55, on the xDrive40, the xDrive50 and the M60 alike. Our 1-Phase, 32A cable is the right buy for a driveway, carrying the whole 7.4 kW a house can produce. Our 22 kW three-phase cable cannot take an iX past its own 11 kW, but on a genuine three-phase supply that 11 kW is worth having on a battery this large. No BMW iX of this generation was offered with a 22 kW onboard charger, so 11 kW is the ceiling either way. The 16A cable is simply not viable here. At 3.7 kW an xDrive50 needs 32 hours 15 minutes from empty, which is a day and a third, and returns about 13 miles of range an hour. Even the smaller xDrive40 takes 21 hours 45 minutes. This is the clearest case in our whole range for not economising on the cable. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable is IP67 sealed and draws 2.3 kW, which on an iX is strictly an emergency measure at roughly 8 miles of range an hour. It has its place for a night at a hotel with nothing else available, and no more than that. Our note on charging from a household socket sets out why. Elsewhere in the range the BMW iX3 and the BMW i7 have their own numbers, and the BMW charging cable range covers the rest. Our IP ratings guide explains what the sealing figures protect against. Two year manufacturer's warranty, free next working day UK delivery, IEC 62196 Type 2 construction, CE certified, rated from -30C to +50C, or +60C for the 3-pin. BMW requoted iX range figures during the model's life, so treat them as a band. Cold weather and motorway speeds each reduce them further. BMW iX Charging Cable FAQs Which cable does a BMW iX need? For a BMW iX the answer is a Type 2 to Type 2 cable at 32A single phase, on every version from the xDrive40 to the M60. It carries the full 7.4 kW a house can supply, and on a battery this large getting every watt matters more than on any other car we cover. How long does a BMW iX take to charge at home? About 16 hours from empty for a 105.2 kWh BMW iX xDrive50 or M60, and about 10 hours 45 minutes for the 71 kWh xDrive40, both on a 7.4 kW wallbox. No off-peak window covers the larger figure, which is why most owners charge nightly from part full rather than running the battery down. Is a three-phase cable worth it on a BMW iX? More so than on almost any car, provided you can reach a genuine three-phase supply. It takes a 105.2 kWh BMW iX from about 16 hours to 10 hours 45 minutes, which is the difference between an overnight charge and one that is still running at lunchtime. At a normal house it delivers 7.4 kW, exactly as the 32A single-phase cable does. Can a BMW iX use a 22kW onboard charger? Not on this generation. Every BMW iX xDrive40, xDrive50 and M60 has an 11 kW onboard charger as standard and there was no 22 kW option on UK cars, so the car caps at 11 kW even on a three-phase supply. Is a 16A cable ever sensible on a BMW iX? No. A 16A cable holds a BMW iX at 3.7 kW, which means 32 hours 15 minutes from empty on the big battery and about 13 miles of range recovered per hour. On a car of this size the saving against a 32A cable is repaid within weeks of charging at off-peak rates. What cable length works for a BMW iX? 10m, and it is not a close call. The iX is nearly five metres long and over two metres wide including mirrors, so it dominates a driveway and the charging flap ends up a long way from most wall units. 5m only makes sense inside a garage where the car parks against the same wall as the charger every time.

The xDrive40e is the first plug-in hybrid X5, built from 2015 to 2018 on the F15 body. It has a 9.2 kWh battery and a Type 2 socket, and its onboard charger is rated 3.7 kW. That single number decides the purchase: a 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable is all this car can use. At 3.7 kW the pack goes from empty to full in about 2 hours 45 minutes. Fit a 32A cable and the figure does not move, because the limit is inside the car. Fit the 32A three phase cable and it still does not move. Spending more buys nothing here, unless you want the cable to outlive the X5 and serve a faster car later. A Type 2 to 3 Pin cable is a sensible second purchase for this particular model. Because the battery is only 9.2 kWh, a 2.3 kW trickle still finishes in around 4 hours 30 minutes, so an ordinary household socket at a hotel or a relative's house is genuinely usable rather than a last resort. That is not the case on a full electric car. Take care not to confuse the xDrive40e with the plug-in X5s that followed it. The xDrive45e of 2019 to 2023 has a much larger 24 kWh battery but the same 3.7 kW charger, so it needs the same 16A cable and simply takes longer. The xDrive50e from 2023 moved to a 7.4 kW charger with 25.7 kWh usable, and that one does want the 32A cable. Trim level makes no difference to any of them. The xDrive30d, xDrive40d, xDrive40i, M60i xDrive and X5 M are not plug-in hybrids and have no charging socket. Choose 5m where the charge point is next to the bay and 10m where it is not. Type 2 to Type 2 cables are IP55 and Type 2 to 3 Pin cables are IP67. All cables include free next working day UK delivery and a 2 year manufacturer's warranty. A 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The F15 xDrive40e has a 3.7 kW onboard charger and a 9.2 kWh battery, so 16A supplies everything the car can accept and returns a full charge in about 2 hours 45 minutes. Larger cables cost more and change nothing at all. Would a 32A cable speed up my xDrive40e? No. The 3.7 kW ceiling is built into the car, so a 32A cable and even a 32A three phase cable both give the same 2 hours 45 minutes. The only argument for buying one is future proofing, if you expect to replace the X5 with a car that charges faster. Is the xDrive40e different from the xDrive45e and xDrive50e? Yes, although the 45e shares its cable. The 2015 to 2018 xDrive40e holds 9.2 kWh and the 2019 to 2023 xDrive45e holds 24 kWh, but both charge at 3.7 kW on 16A. The xDrive50e from 2023 stepped up to 25.7 kWh usable and 7.4 kW, so it wants a 32A cable. Is a 3 pin cable practical on this car? More so than on most. At 2.3 kW a 9.2 kWh battery still fills in roughly 4 hours 30 minutes, so an ordinary domestic socket overnight is a workable option when you are away from a charge point. Keep it as a backup rather than your everyday method at home. How can I tell whether my X5 plugs in? Only the e badged hybrids do. The xDrive30d, xDrive40d, xDrive40i, M60i xDrive and X5 M have no charging socket and no traction battery to fill. If your X5 is a diesel or a straight petrol, none of the cables on this page will connect to it. Is 5m or 10m better for the xDrive40e? 5m is enough for a wallbox fitted beside the parking space on a private drive. Go for 10m if you park kerbside, share a workplace post, or need to reach across the car. Since charges are short on this model, the shorter cable is easier to coil and store.
