    Description

The lead to buy for an A8 plug-in hybrid is the Type 2 to Type 2 32A cable. The 60 TFSI e quattro accepts 7.4 kW on AC, and a 32A single phase cable is the only one here that can actually deliver that much. Fit a 16A lead instead and you halve the rate for no reason.

Before anything else, confirm that your car plugs in. Only a TFSI e badge has a charging port. A petrol TFSI, a TDI diesel and the S8 have no traction battery and no socket. In Britain the plug-in A8 was sold in long wheelbase form alone, as the A8 L 60 TFSI e quattro, from 2020 to 2025. Trim level changes nothing about charging, so a base car and a Vorsprung use identical cables.

The battery holds 14.4 kWh usable from 17.9 kWh gross. On a 7.4 kW home wallbox with the 32A cable, empty to full takes roughly two and a quarter hours, which is an evening rather than a whole night. The 16A cable runs at 3.7 kW and needs about four and a half hours for the same job. A three pin lead delivers 2.3 kW and takes around seven hours, so it covers an overnight top up and little else.

The three phase 32A cable deserves a second thought. Its 22 kW rating counts only at a three phase supply, and UK homes are single phase, so on your own drive it charges at 7.4 kW exactly like the ordinary 32A lead. It repays the extra outlay only if you regularly use a three phase point at work, and even then the car's own 7.4 kW ceiling decides what arrives. For most A8 owners the plain 32A cable is the right spend.

On length, 5m is enough where the wallbox sits opposite the charge flap. The A8 L is a long saloon, so if you reverse onto the drive, share a bay or park past the charger, 10m takes the guesswork out.

Every cable is built to IEC 62196, CE certified, with Type 2 to Type 2 rated IP55 and Type 2 to 3 Pin rated IP67. All come with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty and free next working day UK delivery.

Audi A8 TFSI e Charging Times

    A8 L 60 TFSI e quattro, 2020 to 2025, 14.4 kWh usable battery, 7.4 kW maximum AC charge speed.

Cable Type Max Charge Rate Empty to Full Verdict
    Type 2 to 3 Pin, 2.3 kW (5m / 10m) 2.3 kW 7h 00m Overnight fallback where no wallbox exists
    Type 2 to Type 2, 16A (5m / 10m) 3.7 kW 4h 30m Works, but leaves half the car's speed unused
    Type 2 to Type 2, 32A (5m / 10m) 7.4 kW 2h 15m Best buy, matches the car exactly
Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase (5m / 10m) 7.4 kW, capped by the car 2h 15m No faster than the single phase 32A

Audi A8 TFSI e Charging Cable FAQs

Which cable suits the Audi A8 60 TFSI e?

Choose the Type 2 to Type 2 32A cable. The A8 L 60 TFSI e quattro charges at up to 7.4 kW, and 32A single phase is the rating that carries the full amount. A 16A cable is limited to 3.7 kW, which roughly doubles the time you spend waiting for the same 14.4 kWh.

Is the three phase 22 kW A8 cable worth it?

Only if you use three phase charge points regularly. At home the supply is single phase, so the 22 kW lead falls back to 7.4 kW and matches the standard 32A cable minute for minute. The A8 itself will not exceed 7.4 kW on AC anywhere, so the higher rating never shortens a charge.

How long does an A8 TFSI e take to charge?

From empty, about 2 hours 15 minutes at 7.4 kW using a 32A cable. Step down to a 16A cable at 3.7 kW and it becomes roughly 4 hours 30 minutes. A domestic three pin socket delivers 2.3 kW and takes near enough 7 hours, which suits a parked overnight car.

Does a petrol or diesel A8 need a cable?

No. The TFSI petrol, the TDI diesel and the S8 have no charging port at all, so there is nothing for a cable to connect to. Only cars wearing the TFSI e badge carry a plug-in battery. Check the model badge on your car before you order anything from this page.

Is the UK A8 plug-in only the long wheelbase?

Yes. Audi offered the plug-in hybrid A8 to British buyers as the A8 L 60 TFSI e quattro only, between 2020 and 2025. There was no standard wheelbase plug-in here. Whichever specification your car carries, the charging hardware is the same, so one cable choice covers every UK example.

    Do I need a 5m or 10m cable for an A8 L?

Five metres reaches comfortably when the wallbox is mounted where the charge flap ends up. Ten metres is worth having for this long saloon if you reverse in, park on a shared bay, or the charge point sits at the far end of the drive. Both carry the full 7.4 kW.
