    Description

A Type 2 to 3 pin charging cable turns any ordinary household socket into a charge point. It is the lead to buy if your wall box has not been installed yet, if you park somewhere a fixed charger cannot reach, or if you simply want something in the boot for the nights you end up staying away. One end is a standard UK 3 pin plug, the other is a Type 2 connector built to IEC 62196, the Mennekes standard.

Delivered power is around 2.4 kW, so the sensible way to choose is by the size of your battery. On a plug-in hybrid holding 8 to 15 kWh usable this is a genuine primary charger: four to seven hours from empty, which sits comfortably inside a normal night with hours to spare. A small electric car with 20 to 40 kWh takes nine to nineteen hours from flat, so treat it as an overnight top up in the week and a full charge across a weekend. A mid size car with 50 to 65 kWh needs twenty four to thirty one hours from empty, and a large SUV or saloon with 70 to 100 kWh needs thirty three to forty seven hours. On the bigger cars a twelve hour night adds around one hundred miles, which is why they are better served by daily top ups than by charging from flat.

The current setting is adjustable, and that matters more than it first sounds. Older house wiring and outbuilding sockets do not all enjoy holding the same load for hours on end, so being able to dial the draw down keeps everything comfortable. Turn it down for a socket you are unsure about, and back up when you are on a circuit you trust.

The cable is rated IP67, which is the highest weatherproof rating we fit, so a wet driveway overnight is no trouble at all. It runs from minus thirty to plus sixty five degrees and stores down to minus forty. Every lead is CE certified and comes with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty and free next working day UK delivery.

Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable FAQs

What does a Type 2 to 3 pin cable charge at?

Around 2.4 kW from a standard household socket. On a plug-in hybrid carrying 8 to 15 kWh usable that means a full charge in four to seven hours. A mid size electric car with 50 to 65 kWh would need twenty four to thirty one hours from completely flat, so on larger batteries it is used for top ups.

Which cars can use this cable?

Any vehicle with a Type 2 inlet, which covers nearly every electric car and plug-in hybrid sold in Britain. The car end is a Type 2 connector made to IEC 62196, the Mennekes standard, so if the socket behind your charging flap matches that shape the cable fits. Older cars with a Type 1 inlet need a different lead.

Is it safe to leave outside in the rain?

Yes. This lead carries an IP67 weatherproof rating, the highest we fit to any cable, so rain and a wet driveway overnight are not a concern. It also operates from minus thirty to plus sixty five degrees and stores down to minus forty, so leaving it in the boot through a cold snap does it no harm.

What does the adjustable current setting do?

It lets you raise or lower the draw to suit whatever socket you are plugged into. An older house circuit or an outbuilding supply is happier with a lower setting held for several hours, while a modern, well protected socket will take more. A lower setting charges more slowly but asks less of the wiring.

Should I use this instead of a wall box?

Alongside one, unless you drive a plug-in hybrid. A hybrid pack of 8 to 15 kWh fills overnight with time in hand, so many owners never need anything else. A 70 to 100 kWh SUV needs thirty three to forty seven hours from empty and picks up about a hundred miles in a twelve hour night, which is a top up rather than a charge.

    Which length should I choose?

Five metres suits a socket in a garage or on an outside wall close to where you park. Ten metres is the usual pick when the socket is indoors and the lead has to run out through a doorway or around the car. Fifteen metres covers long driveways, shared yards and awkward parking angles.
