    Description

A Type 2 to Type 2 EV extension cable is the only safe way to add reach to a charging cable you already own. It has a Type 2 socket at one end and a Type 2 plug at the other, so it sits between your wallbox and your existing cable using the same locking connectors the rest of the system already uses. The male head is deliberately shortened so the joined pair sits neatly and the latch still engages properly.

Be clear about what you are buying. This is an extension, not a replacement charging cable. It adds length to the lead you have, and it needs that lead to work. It is also not a household extension lead, and we explain why that matters in our guide to extending an EV charging cable.

    Why buy this cable

    • Adds 5m, 10m or 15m of reach without replacing the cable you already own
    • Solves a short tethered wallbox lead, which cannot be swapped without an installer
    • Keeps the control pilot circuit intact, so the car and charge point still negotiate current properly
    • IP55 rated and built for a British driveway, with an operating range of -30°C to +50°C
    • CE certified to IEC 62196-2, with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty

    Choosing the length and rating

Take the 32amp version unless you know your wallbox and your car are both capped at 16amp. The chain charges at the rating of its weakest link, so a 32amp cable running through a 16amp extension charges at 16amp. For length, measure from the charge point to where the car's socket actually sits when parked, then add the reach your existing cable already gives you.

Length Rating Charge speed Best for
5m 16amp 3.6kW Older 3.6kW wallbox, short top up in reach
5m 32amp 7.2kW Standard 7kW wallbox, small gap to close
10m 16amp 3.6kW Older wallbox, car parked across the drive
10m 32amp 7.2kW The most popular choice for UK driveways
15m 32amp 7.2kW Long drives, shared parking courts, awkward geometry

Length does not slow charging. Voltage drop across a correctly rated conductor at 32 amps is small over these distances, so a 15m extension charges at the same rate as a 5m one.

When an extension is the right call

Buy an extension when the reach problem is occasional, or when the cable is tethered to the wallbox and cannot be replaced. A tethered lead is usually 5m or 7.5m, which runs short the moment you park nose in. If instead you charge from an untethered wallbox and come up short every single day, one longer cable is the better object, because it has no join in the middle. Our Type 2 to Type 2 charging cables run up to 20m.

What this cable will not do

It will not extend a Type 2 to 3 pin cable, because it has Type 2 connectors at both ends. Never run a 3 pin cable through a domestic extension lead or a cable reel either. Our extension cord safety guide covers what goes wrong. It will not extend a CCS or CHAdeMO rapid charging cable either, because those are permanently attached to the post and carry cooling and communication lines.

Type 2 to Type 2 EV Extension Cable FAQs

What does a Type 2 to Type 2 extension cable actually do?

It adds 5m, 10m or 15m of reach to a Type 2 charging cable you already have. The socket end takes your existing cable's plug, and the shortened male head goes into the wallbox or charge point. It is an add on, not a replacement, so you still need your original cable to charge the car.

Does the extra length slow my charging down?

No. Voltage drop across a correctly sized 32 amp conductor over 15m is small enough to ignore, so the 15m version delivers the same 7.2kW as the 5m version. What sets your speed is the lowest limit in the chain, which is your car's onboard charger, your home supply, and the amp rating of the cable and extension.

How do I work out which length I need?

Walk the route with a tape measure, from the charge point to the car's socket as it sits when parked, going round the car rather than over the bonnet. Subtract the length of your existing cable, then round up to the next size. Most UK driveways land on 10m, and 5m suits a small gap left by a short tethered lead.

What is the difference between the 16amp and 32amp versions?

16amp carries up to 3.6kW and 32amp carries up to 7.2kW on a UK single phase supply. The whole run charges at its weakest link, so a 16amp extension will cap a 32amp cable at 3.6kW and roughly double your charging time. Choose 32amp unless you know your wallbox and car are both limited to 16amp.

Is it safe to leave outside or drive over?

It is IP55 rated against dust and water jets and rated from -30°C to +50°C, so rain, frost and a wet driveway are fine while it is in use. Do not park on it or drive over it repeatedly, because crushing damages the conductors inside. Coil it up and store it dry between charges, ideally in a cable bag.

Should I buy this or just a longer charging cable?

Buy the extension if your wallbox has a tethered lead, since that cannot be swapped without an installer, or if you only run short occasionally when away from home. If your wallbox is untethered and you come up short every day, one longer cable up to 20m is tidier, because there is no join to keep dry.

    Pros and cons
