A wired Cat 6 connection delivers more consistent speeds and lower latency than Wi-Fi, making it a better choice for online gaming, 4K streaming, video calls and large file transfers.
Cat 5e cables support speeds up to 1Gbps at 100MHz, which is sufficient for most home broadband connections. Cat 6 cables support the same 1Gbps speed but at a higher 250MHz bandwidth, with stricter specifications for crosstalk and signal noise. This means more stable performance over longer distances, particularly in environments with electrical interference. If you're installing new cabling, Cat 6 is the better long-term choice as it also supports 10Gbps over shorter runs up to 55 metres.
For connecting a device to a router in the same room, 0.5m to 3m is usually sufficient. For runs between rooms or floors, 10m to 25m covers most homes.
