    Check the badge on the boot before you order, because the Prius name covers three different answers. A plain Toyota Prius hybrid, any generation up to 2022, has no charging socket anywhere on the car. Its battery is filled by the engine and by braking, and no cable will change that. The same goes for the Prius+ seven seater built from 2012 to 2020. Only cars badged Plug-in Hybrid can be charged from the mains, and this is the mistake we see most often. Once you know you have a Plug-in, the year decides the connector. The first generation Plug-in, sold from 2012 to 2016, uses a Type 1 inlet, so you need a Type 1 to Type 2 cable. The second generation from 2017 to 2022 and the fifth generation from 2024 onwards both moved to Type 2, so those cars take a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The two are not interchangeable. A Type 2 cable will not physically fit a 2015 Prius Plug-in, and this is worth checking against your V5 rather than guessing. Charging speeds here are modest, which is normal for a plug-in hybrid with a small battery. The 2012 to 2016 car has a 4.4 kWh pack and accepts 2 kW. Toyota GB quotes 2.0 kW and some sources say 2.2 kW, but either way a 16A cable is more than the car will ever use. The 2017 to 2022 car has 8.8 kWh and accepts 3.3 kW, which Toyota puts at about two hours for a full charge. The 2024 car carries 13.6 kWh usable and Toyota's own brochure again quotes 3.3 kW, at about four hours. Toyota's brochure quotes 3.3 kW while its website implies more, and we could not reconcile the two. A 32A cable removes the question because it will carry up to 7.4 kW at home. On the older Plug-ins the 16A cable is already ahead of the car. Is 5m or 10m better for a Prius Plug-in? Five metres is fine if your home unit sits close to where the car parks and the flap faces it. Choose ten metres if you reverse onto the drive, share a charge point with another household, or use workplace bays where you cannot pick your spot. Neither length changes the charging speed.

    Peugeot did something quietly clever with the e-208. The battery grew by barely one kilowatt hour, from 50 kWh to 51 kWh, and the official range grew by forty two miles. The onboard charger stayed at 7.4 kW single phase as standard throughout, which means the same Peugeot e-208 charging cable now returns considerably more miles for every hour it is plugged in. On the newer car a 32A lead puts back about 41 miles an hour against 36 on the original, from an almost identical amount of electricity. All of them use a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The flap sits on the nearside rear quarter, where a fuel filler would be on the petrol 208, so the lead comes in at the back of the car on the passenger side. Buy the 32A single phase cable. Even on a car fitted with Peugeot's optional 11 kW charger, a domestic supply gives one phase and 7.4 kW, so that is what the car receives at home either way. The 22 kW three phase lead is only worth owning if you have an 11 kW e-208 and regular access to a genuine three phase supply, where the 51 kWh battery comes down to about 5 hours. The 16A cable is a poor trade on this car. It takes the 51 kWh e-208 from 7 hours 15 minutes to 14 hours 45 minutes and drops recovery from 41 miles an hour to 21. Half a charge a night is what the cheaper lead actually costs you. Worth adding to the order: the 3-pin lead for the nights you are not at home. Get that pairing wrong and the newer car suffers. Put a 16A cable on a 2020 e-up! and the fill stretches from five hours to ten, because the cable holds the car back to 3.7 kW. The reverse costs nothing: a 32A cable on a 2014 car simply charges at the 3.6 kW the vehicle asks for, with no risk and no benefit. If you are buying blind, or if the car might be sold on, the 32A is the safer purchase. Telling them apart is easy enough by registration year. The first e-up! ran from 2014 to 2016 and the second from 2020 to 2022. If yours falls in that later window it has the bigger battery and the faster charger. Worth saying too: the petrol up!, including the up! GTI, has no charging port at all and needs nothing from this page. Do not spend money on the three phase cable here.     Start with which Ioniq you have, because one of the three does not plug in at all. The Hyundai Ioniq Electric charges at up to 7.2 kW on AC and the Plug-in Hybrid at 3.3 kW. The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid has no charging socket and cannot use a cable of any kind. Among the electric cars there is a second split worth knowing: when Hyundai facelifted the Ioniq Electric in 2020 it raised the battery from 28 kWh to 38.3 kWh and the onboard charger from 6.6 kW to 7.2 kW at the same time, so the newer car both holds more and drinks faster. Both plug-in versions use a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. Hyundai fitted the Type 2 inlet from the start of UK sales in 2016, so there is no Type 1 Ioniq to worry about and no year where the connector changed. The right buy is the 32A single phase cable. A British home supply carries a single phase and can push 7.4 kW through it, slightly more than the Ioniq will accept, so the car is the limit rather than the wiring. The 22 kW three phase lead has no role at all on this model, since the Ioniq never asked for three phase in the first place and cannot use two of the three conductors. On the 38.3 kWh Ioniq Electric the 16A cable is the expensive choice in disguise. Six hours becomes eleven hours forty five, and the cheap rate window is only seven hours long, so the cable decides whether the car fills on the low tariff or spills over into the day rate. Most Ioniq owners end up wanting a domestic socket lead as well. They are meant for fitting by a professional charge point installer, not for plugging in and out yourself. The word tethered is what separates this from an ordinary charging lead. A tethered cable lives on the wallbox. It is wired into the unit at one end and finishes in a Type 1 connector at the other, so the only thing you ever handle is the plug that goes into the car. Nothing is coiled away afterwards, nothing sits in the boot, and on a dark winter evening in the garage that difference is felt every single night. Type 1 is the connector fitted to a generation of electric cars and plug in hybrids sold before Type 2 became the UK standard. It is a five pin single phase design. That single phase construction sets a hard physical ceiling of 7.4 kW, so no Type 1 cable, tethered or portable, can carry three phase power.     For a Kia Optima PHEV, buy the Type 2 to Type 2 16A cable. The onboard charger in this car is rated at 3.3 kW, and 16A carries 3.7 kW, so a 16A lead already gives the car more than it can take. Everything above that is money spent on capacity the Optima cannot use. Before anything else, make sure yours actually plugs in. Most Optimas sold in Britain were the 1.7 CRDi or 2.0 CRDi diesel, and there was a 2.0 T-GDi Optima GT petrol as well. None of those have a charging port or a battery to fill, so no cable on this page fits them. Only cars badged PHEV plug in. Two plug-in versions were built. The Optima PHEV saloon ran from 2016 to 2019 with a 9.8 kWh battery. The Optima Sportswagon PHEV followed from 2017 to 2020 with a slightly larger 11.26 kWh pack. Both share the same Type 2 inlet and the same 3.3 kW charger, so the estate simply takes half an hour or so longer to fill. Trim level changes nothing.
