    Not every Passat charges. The plug-in versions wear a GTE badge on older cars and an eHybrid badge on the current one. A Passat TSI, eTSI or TDI has no socket at all and needs nothing from this page.Plug-in Passats all use Type 2, so the cable you want is Type 2 to Type 2. What changes across the years is how much the car will swallow. The 2015 to 2019 GTE, saloon or estate, holds 9.9 kWh and takes 3.6 kW. The 2019 to 2022 update raised the pack to 13 kWh, 10.6 kWh of it usable, but left the charger alone at 3.6 kW. For either of those, a 16A Type 2 lead is the sensible purchase and a full charge sits between three and three and a quarter hours.The 2024 Passat eHybrid is a different proposition. In 204 and 272 forms it carries 19.7 kWh usable and an 11 kW onboard charger, and Britain gets it as an estate only. There is no new generation saloon here. On that car the 32A cable is the one to buy.     The Seat Mii electric wants a 32A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Its onboard charger accepts 7.2 kW, and a 16A cable can only hand it 3.7 kW, so the cheaper lead would leave half the car's ability unused every night. There is only one electric Mii and it ran from 2020 to 2021, so there is no generation puzzle to solve here. The pack is 36.8 kWh gross with 32.3 kWh usable, and on a 32A cable a full charge takes about five hours. Seat quoted roughly four hours to 80 per cent, which is the figure most owners actually plan around, since few people run a battery flat before plugging in. What does confuse buyers is that this car was built three times over. The Volkswagen e-up! and the Skoda Citigo-e iV came off the same line with the same 32.3 kWh usable battery and the same 7.2 kW charger. If you own any of the three, this cable is the one you need. One detail differs between them, though it has no bearing on your purchase: CCS rapid charging was standard on the Mii electric and the e-up!, but not fitted to every Citigo-e iV, so some Skodas have none at all. Rapid charging happens on DC through a separate part of the inlet, using a lead attached to the charge point. We also stock a three phase 22 kW version of the cable. On this car it does nothing. The Mii is quoted at 7.2 kW and will not ask for more, and a UK domestic supply is single phase anyway, which puts a hard 7.4 kW ceiling on home charging. Save the money and take the 32A single phase cable. A 3 pin cable is worth keeping in the boot for nights away from a charge point. At 2.3 kW it needs somewhere near sixteen hours to fill the battery from empty, so it is a supplement rather than a substitute for a proper wallbox lead. The petrol Mii, the 1.0 MPI sold from 2011 to 2019, has no charging port and takes no cable at all. If your Mii has an exhaust pipe, nothing on this page applies to it. Homes in Britain are single phase and cap charging at 7.4 kW regardless. The 32A single phase cable already reaches the car's limit. Will this cable fit an e-up! or a Citigo-e iV? Yes. The Volkswagen e-up! and Skoda Citigo-e iV are the same car as the Mii electric, sharing the 32.3 kWh usable pack, the Type 2 socket and the 7.2 kW charger. One cable serves all three. Only the fitment of CCS rapid charging differs, and that does not affect your AC cable. Does the petrol Seat Mii plug in?     A Type 2 tethered cable is not a lead you carry. It is the cable that is wired permanently into a charge point, so it hangs on the wall ready to plug into the car and never goes back in the boot. These are the replacement leads for a wallbox built that way. We supply them at 32A in two lengths, 5m and 10m. At 32A on a UK single phase supply the ceiling is 7.4 kW, and that is what a home wallbox can deliver whatever cable is fitted to it. Length is therefore the real decision. Measure from where the unit is mounted to where the charging flap sits when the car is parked as you normally leave it, then allow an extra metre of slack. Take 5m if the wallbox is beside the car and 10m if you park further away or need to reach round to the far side. The convenience is the point. There is nothing to unpack, coil or store, which matters when you plug in every night in the dark. It is also the harder cable to take. Charging cables are actively targeted by thieves in the UK because a loose lead is quick to lift, and one that is bolted into a charge point is a far less inviting prospect. One end terminates inside the charge point and has to be wired in, so this is work for a qualified electrician, ideally the installer who put the unit in. Once it is fitted, hang the cable on a bracket beside the unit rather than letting it rest on the ground. A lead coiled on wet concrete holds water around the connector, and that is where corrosion starts on a cable you expect to keep for years. Type 2 Tethered Charging Cable FAQs What does tethered actually mean? Tethered means the cable is fixed permanently to the charge point rather than being a separate lead. It stays on the wall between charges. The opposite is an untethered or socketed unit, where the wallbox has a socket and you plug your own portable cable into it at both ends every time you charge. Which end goes where? One end is terminated inside the charge point and wired in during installation, so it is never unplugged. The other end is a Type 2 connector that goes into your car's charging inlet. If your car has a Type 2 inlet, this is the right cable. Older cars with a Type 1 inlet need our Type 1 tethered version. Who can fit a tethered cable? A qualified electrician. Fitting means opening the charge point and terminating the cable inside it, which is not a job to attempt yourself and can affect the unit's warranty if done badly. The person or company who installed the wallbox is usually the easiest and cheapest option to call. Does a tethered cable replace my portable one? Only at home. Public AC posts almost all use sockets, so you plug in your own lead there. A tethered wallbox covers your overnight charging, but keep a portable Type 2 cable in the boot for destination charging at car parks, hotels and workplaces. Most drivers with tethered units still carry one. Should I buy the 5m or the 10m? Measure it rather than guess. Run a tape from the wallbox to where your charging flap sits when the car is parked normally, then add a metre so the cable is not stretched tight. Five metres suits a unit next to the bay. Ten metres covers a longer drive or reaching the far side. Will a 32A cable charge my car faster? Not on its own. The car draws the lowest of three limits: what the car's onboard charger accepts, what the supply provides, and what the cable is rated for. A UK home is single phase, so 7.4 kW is the ceiling regardless. A 32A cable simply makes sure the cable is not the bottleneck.

    A BMW i3 charging cable has to suit an onboard AC charger rated at 7.4 kW, which is what BMW fitted to UK cars across all three battery generations. That is worth stating plainly, because the i3 is one of the few cars where what BMW advertised in Europe and what arrived in Britain are not the same thing. When the 94 Ah car launched in 2016 BMW described its charging as multi-phase, capable of 3.7, 7.4 or 11 kW. That 11 kW figure is three separate 3.7 kW modules working together, and it is where the idea of an 11 kW i3 comes from. A car with that three-phase unit plugged into a single-phase British supply charges at only 3.7 kW, because just one of the three modules has anything to draw from. UK supplied cars got the 7.4 kW single-phase charger instead, which is twice as fast at a house. So if your i3 sits at 3.7 kW on a 7 kW wallbox, it is very probably not faulty and not the cable. It is more likely a car built for a market with three-phase housing. A 32A cable will not change that, and neither will anything else you can buy. Every BMW i3 and i3 REx uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, IP55 sealed on ours. Type 1 was fitted only to North American cars and never here, whatever the age of the car. For a UK car our 1-Phase, 32A cable is the right buy. It carries the full 7.4 kW and fills the final 42.2 kWh car in about 5 hours 45 minutes, the 33 kWh car in 4 hours 15 minutes and the original 22 kWh car in 2 hours 45 minutes. The 16A cable halves the rate to 3.7 kW and roughly doubles all three, which on a car with this little battery is a real daily cost. Skip the 22 kW three-phase cable. A UK i3 has a single-phase charger, so the extra phases have nothing to connect to at a house or anywhere else. The small battery makes our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable more useful here than on most electric cars. It is IP67 sealed, takes 2.3 kW and fills the 22 kWh car in about 9 hours 15 minutes, so an early i3 can genuinely be run from a household socket. For home use the 32A rating is the one to choose, since a UK i3 accepts 7.4 kW and that cable delivers all of it. Why does my BMW i3 only charge at 3.7kW? Almost certainly because it has the three-phase onboard charger fitted to cars built for markets with three-phase housing. That unit is three 3.7 kW modules, and a single-phase British supply can feed only one of them. A UK supplied BMW i3 has a 7.4 kW single-phase charger instead. No cable can change which unit is in the car. Is a 22kW cable any use on a BMW i3? No. A UK BMW i3 has a single-phase onboard charger, so the extra phases in a 22 kW cable have nothing to connect to, at home or anywhere else. It costs more than the 32A single-phase cable and charges the car at exactly the same speed. Was the i3 REx sold with the 42.2kWh battery? Not in the UK. BMW withdrew the range extender from Europe in October 2018, immediately before the 120 Ah battery arrived, so a British BMW i3 REx will have either the 60 Ah or the 94 Ah pack. The 42.2 kWh REx was a North American car. Can a BMW i3 run on a three-pin cable? An early one genuinely can. A Type 2 to 3-Pin cable gives the BMW i3 2.3 kW, which fills the original 22 kWh battery in about 9 hours 15 minutes, comfortably inside a night. On the 42.2 kWh car it takes over 18 hours, so there it is a backup rather than a plan. What cable length does a BMW i3 need? 5m is usually plenty. The i3 is under four metres long and takes up very little driveway, and the charging flap sits on the rear offside where it is easy to reach from most wall unit positions. Choose 10m if the i3 lives on the street, or if it is parked behind a larger car and cannot get close to the wall.

Skoda quotes about four hours fifteen minutes to reach 80 per cent.Swap to a 16A cable and the ceiling drops to 3.7 kW, which stretches the same charge out to nearly ten hours. That is the whole argument for the dearer cable on this car: a small hatchback battery, but one that still needs a full night at half speed.Worth knowing before you order: the Citigo-e iV is mechanically the same car as the SEAT Mii electric and the Volkswagen e-up!. Same 32.3 kWh usable pack, same 7.2 kW charger, same Type 2 inlet. If you own any of the three, this cable is the one.The three do differ in one respect. CCS rapid charging came as standard on the Mii electric and the e-up!, but it was not fitted to every Citigo. Look below the Type 2 socket for a second, wider opening. If it is not there, your car has no rapid charging. Either way it makes no difference to which AC cable you need.The 22 kW three phase cable is not worth the money here.     Both plug-in versions of the B Class take a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and on both the 32A version is the one to buy. What separates them is how much they hold, and so how long they sit on the drive. There are two of them and they are easy to confuse, because Mercedes used the B 250 e badge twice. The 2015 to 2017 car, sold as the B-Class Electric Drive and later relabelled B 250 e, is fully electric with 28 kWh of usable battery from a 31 kWh pack. The 2020 to 2022 B 250 e is a plug-in hybrid: 15.6 kWh installed, about 10.6 kWh of it usable, with a petrol engine alongside it. Same socket, very different charging job. The electric car's onboard charger is the one figure we cannot pin down. It is widely reported as 9.6 kW, which Mercedes UK has never confirmed. What Mercedes did publish was 3 to 4 hours from a wallbox. In a British house the distinction is academic, because domestic supplies here are single phase and 7.4 kW is the practical ceiling whatever the car will accept. A 32A Type 2 cable delivers that 7.4 kW, which puts 28 kWh in over roughly four and a quarter hours. The plug-in hybrid is quoted at 7.4 kW, so the same 32A cable is again correct. With only 10.6 kWh to replace it finishes in about an hour and a half, which is short enough to be worth doing during a supermarket shop. The 16A cable at 3.7 kW fits both cars but roughly doubles every figure above. It is worth buying only if the charge point you use is itself limited to 16A. The 3 pin cable is a fallback on the electric car, where 28 kWh at 2.3 kW runs to nearly fourteen hours, though it is more reasonable on the hybrid. We also list a three phase 22 kW cable. It is worth knowing what that box actually bought, because plenty of used Corsa-e buyers are now told they need a matching 22 kW cable. At a British house a Vauxhall Corsa-e charges at 7.4 kW whether the option was ticked or not, since the optional charger needs three phases to show its value and a home has one. And the current petrol cars MINI itself calls Countryman C and Countryman S are 48 volt mild hybrids with no charging socket at all, despite the word hybrid appearing in the model name. Any Countryman that plugs in uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The socket moved between generations: the F60 plug-in hybrid takes its charge through a flap in the left-hand front scuttle, ahead of the driver's door, while the 2024 Countryman Electric charges through the right rear side panel. Three phase power comes into commercial premises, not houses, and a domestic supply caps everything at 7.4 kW, which is what a Countryman Electric will draw on your driveway whether it left the factory with the 11 kW charger or the 22 kW one.     Buying a Panamera E-Hybrid used and finding no cable in the boot is common, and replacing it correctly takes one piece of information: the rating of the onboard charger fitted to your car. Every plug-in Panamera uses a Type 2 socket, so the connector is never in doubt. What varies is how much the car will draw. On cars from 2017 to 2023 Porsche fitted a 3.6 kW charger as standard and offered a 7.2 kW charger as a paid option. Usefully, the UK model name spells out which one you have, so your V5 or the original invoice settles it in seconds. A 3.6 kW car cannot use more than a 16A cable provides. A 7.2 kW car needs the 32A cable to work at full speed, and running one on a 16A lead roughly doubles every charge. The generations themselves are straightforward.     The Mazda MX-30 takes 6.6 kW AC, the lowest onboard charging rate of any electric car we write about. Mazda withdrew the MX-30 from the UK range during 2025, so almost everyone buying a cable for one now is a second or third owner, often working out what the original supplying dealer did or did not hand over with the car. The MX-30 uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The inlet is a CCS Combo 2 on the rear right wing, and the round Type 2 portion at the top is where an AC cable connects. There is no Type 1 version of this car, so if a private seller hands you a Type 1 lead it did not come with the MX-30. Because the car's own charger caps at 6.6 kW, the MX-30 is the rare case where the limit sits in the vehicle rather than in your house. Most electric cars accept 11 kW and are held to 7.4 kW by a single phase domestic supply. The MX-30 cannot reach even 7.4. A 32A single phase cable will feed it 6.6 kW, which is everything it can take, and a 22 kW three phase cable would deliver exactly the same 6.6 kW for more money. Given the MX-30's modest 124 mile range, losing half your charging speed hurts more here than it would on a long range car, because there is less buffer to absorb a night when charging did not finish.     Every electric DS 3 uses a Type 2 inlet, so the cable to buy is a Type 2 to Type 2 32A. At a British house that pulls the full 7.4 kW, which is as much as a single phase supply will ever hand over. One cable covers the whole run of the car, whatever it says on the boot lid. Two things confuse people shopping for this one. The first is the name. DS dropped Crossback from the badge at the 2023 facelift, so the same car is a DS 3 Crossback E-Tense before that point and a plain DS 3 E-Tense afterwards. Nothing about the charging socket changed with the name. The second is the onboard charger, and this is the real generation split. The original 50 kWh car, built from 2020 to 2022 with 46.3 kWh usable and 136hp, came with a 7.4 kW charger as standard and an 11 kW unit as a cost option. The 2023 facelift moved to a 54 kWh pack, 50.8 kWh usable and 156hp, with the 11 kW charger fitted as standard. That difference only shows up on three phase power. Plug either car into a home wallbox and both charge at 7.4 kW, because your house cannot supply more. What that means in practice: the 46.3 kWh car goes from empty to full in about seven hours on a 32A cable, and the 50.8 kWh facelift in about seven and three quarters. Both are comfortable overnight jobs. Step down to a 16A cable and those stretch past fourteen and fifteen hours, which is why we do not recommend one unless your supply is genuinely limited to 16A. The three phase 32A cable only earns its place if you regularly use a three phase post at work or in a car park, where an 11 kW car cuts the facelift down to around five and a quarter hours. Both cars also carry a CCS socket for rapid charging, rated at 101 kW on the early car and 107 kW on the facelift, and rapid units come with their own lead attached. Petrol and diesel DS 3 models have no charging port at all, and there has never been a plug-in hybrid version. Pick 5m for a close wallbox, 10m for reach. A Type 2 to Type 2 cable in 32A. Every electric DS 3 has a Type 2 socket, and 32A carries 7.4 kW, the maximum a UK home supply can deliver. That fills the 46.3 kWh early car in about seven hours and the 50.8 kWh facelift in about seven and three quarter hours. Is the three phase cable worth it on a DS 3? Only if you charge on three phase power away from home. The facelift takes 11 kW as standard and the earlier car needed the optional charger to do the same, cutting a full charge to roughly 5 hours 15 minutes or 4 hours 45 minutes. On a home supply both cars sit at 7.4 kW. How long does a DS 3 E-Tense take to charge? On a 7.4 kW wallbox, about 7 hours for the 46.3 kWh usable car built to 2022 and about 7 hours 45 minutes for the 50.8 kWh version from 2023. A 16A cable pushes those to roughly 14 hours 15 minutes and 15 hours 30 minutes, so it is a poor swap. Is the DS 3 E-Tense the same as the Crossback? Yes, the badge simply lost a word. Cars from 2020 to 2022 are DS 3 Crossback E-Tense with a 50 kWh pack, and the 2023 facelift became DS 3 E-Tense with 54 kWh and 156hp. The Type 2 socket is unchanged across both, so one cable fits whichever you own. Does the petrol DS 3 need a charging cable? No. The PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel DS 3 and DS 3 Crossback have no charging port and no traction battery, so nothing here will connect to them. There has never been a plug-in hybrid DS 3 either. Only the E-Tense badge takes a cable. Should I choose 5m or 10m for a DS 3? Five metres is fine when the wallbox is fitted within reach of your usual parking spot. Ten metres covers awkward driveways, a garage wall on the far side, or public posts where you take whichever bay is free. Longer 15 metre and 20 metre 32A cables are listed too.

    An EV charging cable bag is one of those purchases nobody plans and everybody eventually makes. The cable comes with the car, it gets tossed into the boot, and within a couple of months there is a permanent damp patch on the carpet and a black smear on every bag of shopping that touches it. A proper case ends that. Ours is a hardback design with a zipped opening. The zip is the part that earns its keep day to day. The bag closes completely, so nothing works its way loose while you drive and nothing spills out when you swing it up into the boot. The hard back means the case sits square rather than folding flat under whatever gets loaded on top of it. It is fully waterproof. Charging happens outdoors, usually in weather, and a lead pulled off a wet public post is going somewhere. Sealing it in the bag keeps that water off the boot floor. The bag is also dust and corrosion resistant, which is the quieter benefit. Grit settling into a connector is what shortens a cable's life, and a closed case keeps it out. That covers the two lengths most drivers own, a 5m lead for a wallbox beside the car and a 10m lead for a longer drive or public use. Anything above 10 metres needs our large storage bag, which is rated to 15m. Can I get a 10m 32A cable in it? Yes, a 10m 32A lead is exactly what the capacity is quoted against. Coil it in loose, wide loops rather than winding it tightly round your forearm. Loose coils drop in easily, let the zip close without straining, and avoid putting a hard bend into the cable right behind each connector. Is the bag waterproof or only weather resistant? The specification for this bag is fully waterproof, not simply showerproof. That means a lead that has come off a soaking charge point can go straight in and stay sealed. It is dust and corrosion resistant too, so the connector pins are protected from the grit that does most of the long term harm. Will it keep my boot clean? Yes, and for most buyers that is the whole point. A loose cable drags road salt, water and grit across the boot lining every time it moves. Choose on your cable length first, then decide how much crush protection the boot really demands. Does a bag help protect the cable itself? It helps in two ways. It keeps water and grit off the pins, which is where corrosion starts, and it stops the lead being dragged around loose and scuffed against tools, tow ropes or a cargo floor. Neither is dramatic, but a cable is an expensive item to replace early.
