    Check the badge on the boot before you order, because the Prius name covers three different answers. A plain Toyota Prius hybrid, any generation up to 2022, has no charging socket anywhere on the car. Its battery is filled by the engine and by braking, and no cable will change that. The same goes for the Prius+ seven seater built from 2012 to 2020. Only cars badged Plug-in Hybrid can be charged from the mains, and this is the mistake we see most often. Once you know you have a Plug-in, the year decides the connector. The first generation Plug-in, sold from 2012 to 2016, uses a Type 1 inlet, so you need a Type 1 to Type 2 cable. The second generation from 2017 to 2022 and the fifth generation from 2024 onwards both moved to Type 2, so those cars take a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The two are not interchangeable. A Type 2 cable will not physically fit a 2015 Prius Plug-in, and this is worth checking against your V5 rather than guessing. Charging speeds here are modest, which is normal for a plug-in hybrid with a small battery. The 2012 to 2016 car has a 4.4 kWh pack and accepts 2 kW. Toyota GB quotes 2.0 kW and some sources say 2.2 kW, but either way a 16A cable is more than the car will ever use. The 2017 to 2022 car has 8.8 kWh and accepts 3.3 kW, which Toyota puts at about two hours for a full charge. The 2024 car carries 13.6 kWh usable and Toyota's own brochure again quotes 3.3 kW, at about four hours. Because every Prius Plug-in is limited by its own onboard charger rather than by the cable, a 16A cable is genuinely enough on all of them. We list the 32A version for the 2024 car for one reason: Toyota's website implies a faster rate than its brochure, we could not reconcile the two, and a 32A cable covers you either way at no risk. There is no benefit in a three phase cable on any Prius. None of these cars has rapid charging, so the cable you buy is the way you charge it. Around two and a half hours for the 4.4 kWh car of 2012 to 2016, about two hours for the 8.8 kWh car of 2017 to 2022, and about four hours for the 13.6 kWh car from 2024. These are Toyota's own figures where quoted. A three pin socket adds roughly an hour on the newer cars. Is the 32A cable worth it on a Prius Plug-in? Only on the 2024 car, and then as insurance. Toyota's brochure quotes 3.3 kW while its website implies more, and we could not reconcile the two. A 32A cable removes the question because it will carry up to 7.4 kW at home. On the older Plug-ins the 16A cable is already ahead of the car. Is 5m or 10m better for a Prius Plug-in? Five metres is fine if your home unit sits close to where the car parks and the flap faces it. Choose ten metres if you reverse onto the drive, share a charge point with another household, or use workplace bays where you cannot pick your spot. Neither length changes the charging speed.

    Three different plug-in Audi A6s now share the name, and only one of them is this car. The Audi A6 TFSI e, the C8 plug-in hybrid sold from 2020, charges at 7.4 kW single phase and never had a faster option. The A6 e-tron is fully electric, takes 11 kW and has two charging ports. The newer A6 e-hybrid, which replaced the TFSI e badge, also takes 11 kW. If your car wears TFSI e on the boot, the number that matters is 7.4 kW, and this is the right page. An Audi A6 TFSI e uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. Audi supplied a Mode 3 cable with the car when new, which many used examples no longer have. The charging flap sits on the left side towards the front, opposite the fuel filler, though Audi does not state the position in its own literature so it is worth confirming on your own car. Buy the 32A single phase cable. This is one of the tidiest matches in the catalogue: the car asks for 7.4 kW, a British single phase supply provides exactly 7.4 kW, and the 32A cable carries it. Three phase power belongs to commercial premises, and even if you had it, the A6 TFSI e could not take a watt more than it does on your driveway. The 22 kW cable cannot help this car anywhere. The 16A cable is the one to think twice about. Two and a quarter hours becomes four and a half, on a car charged every night, and the miles put back per hour drop from 22 to 11. On a battery this size the 3-pin lead is a genuine overnight charge. An Audi A6 TFSI e needs a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable in the 32A single phase specification. The car draws 7.4 kW at most, a British house supplies exactly that much, and this is the cable that connects the two without losing anything in between. Is the Audi A6 TFSI e the same as the A6 e-tron? No, and they charge very differently. The Audi A6 TFSI e is a petrol plug-in hybrid limited to 7.4 kW on AC. The A6 e-tron is fully electric, takes 11 kW three phase and has a charging port on each side of the car. The newer A6 e-hybrid also takes 11 kW. Given the car's length, 10m is the safer order if you reverse in or the unit is at the far end of the space. Can I use my own cable at a public charge point? Yes, on AC. Untethered Type 2 posts are the norm in UK streets and car parks, and the A6 TFSI e uses the same lead there as at home.     Every electric DS 3 uses a Type 2 inlet, so the cable to buy is a Type 2 to Type 2 32A. At a British house that pulls the full 7.4 kW, which is as much as a single phase supply will ever hand over. One cable covers the whole run of the car, whatever it says on the boot lid. Two things confuse people shopping for this one. The first is the name. DS dropped Crossback from the badge at the 2023 facelift, so the same car is a DS 3 Crossback E-Tense before that point and a plain DS 3 E-Tense afterwards. Nothing about the charging socket changed with the name. The second is the onboard charger, and this is the real generation split. The original 50 kWh car, built from 2020 to 2022 with 46.3 kWh usable and 136hp, came with a 7.4 kW charger as standard and an 11 kW unit as a cost option. The 2023 facelift moved to a 54 kWh pack, 50.8 kWh usable and 156hp, with the 11 kW charger fitted as standard. That difference only shows up on three phase power. Plug either car into a home wallbox and both charge at 7.4 kW, because your house cannot supply more. What that means in practice: the 46.3 kWh car goes from empty to full in about seven hours on a 32A cable, and the 50.8 kWh facelift in about seven and three quarters. Both are comfortable overnight jobs. Step down to a 16A cable and those stretch past fourteen and fifteen hours, which is why we do not recommend one unless your supply is genuinely limited to 16A. The three phase 32A cable only earns its place if you regularly use a three phase post at work or in a car park, where an 11 kW car cuts the facelift down to around five and a quarter hours. Both cars also carry a CCS socket for rapid charging, rated at 101 kW on the early car and 107 kW on the facelift, and rapid units come with their own lead attached. Petrol and diesel DS 3 models have no charging port at all, and there has never been a plug-in hybrid version. Pick 5m for a close wallbox, 10m for reach. A 16A cable pushes those to roughly 14 hours 15 minutes and 15 hours 30 minutes, so it is a poor swap. Is the DS 3 E-Tense the same as the Crossback? Yes, the badge simply lost a word. Cars from 2020 to 2022 are DS 3 Crossback E-Tense with a 50 kWh pack, and the 2023 facelift became DS 3 E-Tense with 54 kWh and 156hp. The Type 2 socket is unchanged across both, so one cable fits whichever you own. Does the petrol DS 3 need a charging cable? No. The PureTech petrol and BlueHDi diesel DS 3 and DS 3 Crossback have no charging port and no traction battery, so nothing here will connect to them. There has never been a plug-in hybrid DS 3 either. Only the E-Tense badge takes a cable. Should I choose 5m or 10m for a DS 3? Five metres is fine when the wallbox is fitted within reach of your usual parking spot.     A BMW i3 charging cable has to suit an onboard AC charger rated at 7.4 kW, which is what BMW fitted to UK cars across all three battery generations. That is worth stating plainly, because the i3 is one of the few cars where what BMW advertised in Europe and what arrived in Britain are not the same thing. When the 94 Ah car launched in 2016 BMW described its charging as multi-phase, capable of 3.7, 7.4 or 11 kW. That 11 kW figure is three separate 3.7 kW modules working together, and it is where the idea of an 11 kW i3 comes from. A car with that three-phase unit plugged into a single-phase British supply charges at only 3.7 kW, because just one of the three modules has anything to draw from. UK supplied cars got the 7.4 kW single-phase charger instead, which is twice as fast at a house. So if your i3 sits at 3.7 kW on a 7 kW wallbox, it is very probably not faulty and not the cable. It is more likely a car built for a market with three-phase housing. A 32A cable will not change that, and neither will anything else you can buy. Every BMW i3 and i3 REx uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, IP55 sealed on ours. Type 1 was fitted only to North American cars and never here, whatever the age of the car. For a UK car our 1-Phase, 32A cable is the right buy. It carries the full 7.4 kW and fills the final 42.2 kWh car in about 5 hours 45 minutes, the 33 kWh car in 4 hours 15 minutes and the original 22 kWh car in 2 hours 45 minutes. The 16A cable halves the rate to 3.7 kW and roughly doubles all three, which on a car with this little battery is a real daily cost. Skip the 22 kW three-phase cable. A UK i3 has a single-phase charger, so the extra phases have nothing to connect to at a house or anywhere else. The small battery makes our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable more useful here than on most electric cars. It is IP67 sealed, takes 2.3 kW and fills the 22 kWh car in about 9 hours 15 minutes, so an early i3 can genuinely be run from a household socket. Our note on charging from a household socket covers where that stops working. One point on the range extender: the i3 REx was withdrawn in Europe in October 2018, just before the 120 Ah battery arrived, so there is no UK 42.2 kWh i3 REx. Winter and motorway pace both cut them further. BMW i3 Charging Cable FAQs What cable does a BMW i3 use? The BMW i3 charges through Type 2 at both ends, on every model year and including the REx. For home use the 32A rating is the one to choose, since a UK i3 accepts 7.4 kW and that cable delivers all of it. Why does my BMW i3 only charge at 3.7kW? Almost certainly because it has the three-phase onboard charger fitted to cars built for markets with three-phase housing. That unit is three 3.7 kW modules, and a single-phase British supply can feed only one of them. A UK supplied BMW i3 has a 7.4 kW single-phase charger instead. No cable can change which unit is in the car. Is a 22kW cable any use on a BMW i3? No. A UK BMW i3 has a single-phase onboard charger, so the extra phases in a 22 kW cable have nothing to connect to, at home or anywhere else. It costs more than the 32A single-phase cable and charges the car at exactly the same speed. Was the i3 REx sold with the 42.2kWh battery? Not in the UK. BMW withdrew the range extender from Europe in October 2018, immediately before the 120 Ah battery arrived, so a British BMW i3 REx will have either the 60 Ah or the 94 Ah pack. The 42.2 kWh REx was a North American car. Can a BMW i3 run on a three-pin cable? An early one genuinely can. A Type 2 to 3-Pin cable gives the BMW i3 2.3 kW, which fills the original 22 kWh battery in about 9 hours 15 minutes, comfortably inside a night. On the 42.2 kWh car it takes over 18 hours, so there it is a backup rather than a plan. What cable length does a BMW i3 need? 5m is usually plenty. The i3 is under four metres long and takes up very little driveway, and the charging flap sits on the rear offside where it is easy to reach from most wall unit positions. Choose 10m if the i3 lives on the street, or if it is parked behind a larger car and cannot get close to the wall.

    Not every Passat charges. The plug-in versions wear a GTE badge on older cars and an eHybrid badge on the current one.     A second generation Kia e-Soul charges at 7.2 kW on AC through a Type 2 inlet. A first generation Kia Soul EV charges at up to 6.6 kW through a Type 1 inlet. That is the whole Kia Soul EV charging cable decision, and the registration year will not settle it, because both cars were sold on 2019 plates. Open the flap and look at the DC socket instead. A round CHAdeMO port beside the inlet means the older car and a Type 1 lead. A CCS port, which is the inlet with two large pins added underneath, means the newer car and a Type 2 lead. Both generations charge through a flap set into the middle of the front grille, so the cable has to reach the nose of the car whichever Soul is sitting on the drive. Kia has never put the socket anywhere else on this model. For the e-Soul, order the 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Its 7.2 kW charger is a single phase unit, which suits British wiring exactly, since a domestic supply carries one phase and hands over up to 7.4 kW. We do not list a 22 kW three phase lead for this car and there would be no point in one, because there is nothing on a Soul for the extra two phases to feed. 16A is a false economy on a 64 kWh e-Soul. The car is held to 3.7 kW, which turns a 10 hour fill into one lasting 19 hours 30 minutes, so the battery cannot get from empty to full inside a night. Miles recovered per hour halve, from about 32 to 16. That gap is why the 16A lead only makes sense on the small first generation battery.     The BMW 740e takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and the 16A version is the one we recommend. This is a plug-in hybrid with a 9.2 kWh battery, so the pack is small and there is nothing for a bigger cable to do. Save the money and put it towards a second cable for the boot. Two plug-in 7 Series were sold in the UK. The 740e, 740Le and 740Le xDrive iPerformance ran from 2016 to 2019 with a 9.2 kWh battery. The 745e, 745Le and 745Le xDrive replaced them from 2019 to 2022 and carry 12 kWh. Both use the same Type 2 inlet, so one cable covers either car and the badge only changes how long a full charge takes. BMW never published an AC charge rate for these cars, so we will not quote one.     A Type 2 tethered cable is not a lead you carry. It is the cable that is wired permanently into a charge point, so it hangs on the wall ready to plug into the car and never goes back in the boot. These are the replacement leads for a wallbox built that way. We supply them at 32A in two lengths, 5m and 10m. At 32A on a UK single phase supply the ceiling is 7.4 kW, and that is what a home wallbox can deliver whatever cable is fitted to it. Length is therefore the real decision. Measure from where the unit is mounted to where the charging flap sits when the car is parked as you normally leave it, then allow an extra metre of slack. Take 5m if the wallbox is beside the car and 10m if you park further away or need to reach round to the far side. The convenience is the point. There is nothing to unpack, coil or store, which matters when you plug in every night in the dark. It is also the harder cable to take. Charging cables are actively targeted by thieves in the UK because a loose lead is quick to lift, and one that is bolted into a charge point is a far less inviting prospect. One end terminates inside the charge point and has to be wired in, so this is work for a qualified electrician, ideally the installer who put the unit in. Once it is fitted, hang the cable on a bracket beside the unit rather than letting it rest on the ground. A lead coiled on wet concrete holds water around the connector, and that is where corrosion starts on a cable you expect to keep for years. Type 2 Tethered Charging Cable FAQs What does tethered actually mean? Tethered means the cable is fixed permanently to the charge point rather than being a separate lead. It stays on the wall between charges. The opposite is an untethered or socketed unit, where the wallbox has a socket and you plug your own portable cable into it at both ends every time you charge. Which end goes where? One end is terminated inside the charge point and wired in during installation, so it is never unplugged. The other end is a Type 2 connector that goes into your car's charging inlet. If your car has a Type 2 inlet, this is the right cable. Older cars with a Type 1 inlet need our Type 1 tethered version. Who can fit a tethered cable? A qualified electrician. Fitting means opening the charge point and terminating the cable inside it, which is not a job to attempt yourself and can affect the unit's warranty if done badly. The person or company who installed the wallbox is usually the easiest and cheapest option to call. Does a tethered cable replace my portable one? Only at home. Public AC posts almost all use sockets, so you plug in your own lead there. A tethered wallbox covers your overnight charging, but keep a portable Type 2 cable in the boot for destination charging at car parks, hotels and workplaces. Most drivers with tethered units still carry one. Should I buy the 5m or the 10m? Measure it rather than guess. Run a tape from the wallbox to where your charging flap sits when the car is parked normally, then add a metre so the cable is not stretched tight. Five metres suits a unit next to the bay.     For a Grandland X Hybrid the right product is a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and the amperage depends on which onboard charger your car left the factory with. 3.7 kW was standard and 7.4 kW was an option. A 16A cable covers the standard charger fully. A 32A cable covers both, so if you do not know which one you have, 32A is the safe choice. The plug-in Grandland X, sold as Hybrid4 300 with four wheel drive or Hybrid 225 with front wheel drive from 2020 to 2021, carries a 13.2 kWh battery. On the standard 3.7 kW charger a full charge takes about 4 hours. With the optional 7.4 kW charger and a 32A cable that halves to roughly 2 hours. Neither version has any rapid charging, so the cable in the boot is the only way to fill it. Vauxhall dropped the X from the name in 2021, but the plug-in hybrid carried on unchanged until 2024, so the same advice applies to those cars. Now the trap. The Grandland Hybrid launched in early 2024 is a 48V mild hybrid with a 0.9 kWh battery and no charging port whatsoever. It shares almost the same name as the plug-in and it cannot be charged. If your car is a 2024 or later and the badge simply reads Hybrid, walk round it and look for a charging flap before buying anything. From 2025 there is a proper plug-in again, the Grandland Plug-in Hybrid 225, with a much larger 21 kWh pack and 17.9 kWh usable. Same 3.7 kW charger as standard and the same 7.4 kW option, so a full charge is about 5 hours 30 minutes or 2 hours 45 minutes respectively. The Grandland Electric from late 2024 is the full battery car, with 73 kWh usable.     The eSprinter is a Type 2 van and a 32A Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the one to order. Its charging inlet sits behind the badge in the grille rather than on the side of the body, which is worth knowing when you decide how the van sits in relation to the charge point. Which eSprinter you run decides how long a charge takes. The first van, sold from 2020 to 2023, has a 55 kWh gross pack with 47 kWh usable and a 7.4 kW onboard charger. That is a full charge in about 7 hours 15 minutes, which sits comfortably inside an overnight stand at the depot. The second generation from 2024 moved to an 11 kW charger and much larger batteries. On a UK single phase supply the 113 kWh van takes roughly 17 hours 15 minutes and the 81 kWh version around 12 hours 15 minutes. Those are worst case numbers, measured from flat. A van coming back with a third of its pack left will still be ready by morning. Note what is happening there. UK premises are single phase, so 7.4 kW is your ceiling at home or at a standard commercial charge point, whatever the van's 11 kW charger could manage. If your depot really does have three phase power, the 22kW cable lets a second generation van pull its full 11 kW, cutting the 113 kWh van to about 11 hours 30 minutes and the 81 kWh van to roughly 8 hours 15 minutes. On the first generation van it changes nothing. Trim and line make no difference to charging, so there is no need to match your specification to a cable. Length deserves thought on a van this size. Because the socket is at the very front, an eSprinter usually has to nose in towards the post, and five metres can be tight on a busy site. 10m handles most depots and kerbside stops.     Buy the 32A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for a Citroen e-C4. Every e-C4 and e-C4 X built uses a Type 2 inlet and a 7.4 kW onboard charger as standard, and 7.4 kW is exactly what a 32A single phase cable carries. That pairing suits almost every driveway in Britain. Citroen sold an 11 kW three phase charger as a £300 option, and it deserves a warning rather than a recommendation. Eleven kilowatts is a three phase rating, reached only at a three phase supply, which almost no UK home has. Citroen's own price guide goes further and states that on a single phase supply an 11 kW car charges more slowly than a 7.4 kW one. Unless you regularly use three phase posts, the standard charger with a 32A cable will serve you better. There are two battery sizes to know about. Cars badged 50 kWh, on sale from 2021 and joined by the e-C4 X fastback in 2023, hold 46.3 kWh usable. From June 2023 Citroen added a 54 kWh, 156hp version holding 50.8 kWh usable, offered in both hatchback and X bodies. They share the same connector and the same standard charge rate. The larger pack simply spends about forty five minutes longer on the wallbox. The 16A cable tops out at 3.7 kW and doubles the wait, so it earns its keep only if you regularly meet a 16A commando post. The e-Rifter is the passenger version of the e-Partner van and carries identical charging hardware. That single number decides the purchase: a 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable is all this car can use. At 3.7 kW the pack goes from empty to full in about 2 hours 45 minutes. Fit a 32A cable and the figure does not move, because the limit is inside the car. Fit the 32A three phase cable and it still does not move. Spending more buys nothing here, unless you want the cable to outlive the X5 and serve a faster car later. A Type 2 to 3 Pin cable is a sensible second purchase for this particular model. Because the battery is only 9.2 kWh, a 2.3 kW trickle still finishes in around 4 hours 30 minutes, so an ordinary household socket at a hotel or a relative's house is genuinely usable rather than a last resort. That is not the case on a full electric car. Take care not to confuse the xDrive40e with the plug-in X5s that followed it. The xDrive45e of 2019 to 2023 has a much larger 24 kWh battery but the same 3.7 kW charger, so it needs the same 16A cable and simply takes longer. The xDrive50e from 2023 moved to a 7.4 kW charger with 25.7 kWh usable, and that one does want the 32A cable. Trim level makes no difference to any of them. The xDrive30d, xDrive40d, xDrive40i, M60i xDrive and X5 M are not plug-in hybrids and have no charging socket. Choose 5m where the charge point is next to the bay and 10m where it is not.     Only one Leon takes a charging cable, and the year it was built decides how much cable you need. The plug-in is the e-HYBRID. Nothing else in the range has a socket. The eTSI is a 48 volt mild hybrid that refills itself from the engine, and TSI petrol and TDI diesel cars have no charging port at all. If the tailgate does not read e-HYBRID, no cable on this page will fit your car.Leon e-HYBRID models built from 2020 to 2024 use the 1.4 TSI 204PS drivetrain, a 12.8 kWh pack holding around 10.6 kWh usable, and a 3.6 kW onboard charger.
