    Description

A Hyundai Kona Electric takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and how fast it pulls depends on which generation you have. Cars from 2018 to 2023 accept 7.2 kW. Cars from 2023 onwards accept 10.5 kW. Buy the 32A single phase cable either way.

Check one thing before you order. The Kona Hybrid has no charging socket at all, in either generation, and there has never been a Kona plug-in hybrid in Britain. If yours is the Hybrid there is no cable to buy, from us or anyone.

The 32A is right on both generations for the same reason: a British house supplies one phase and one phase carries 7.4 kW. On a first generation Kona that covers the full 7.2 kW the car will take. On a second generation car the extra headroom above 7.4 kW only exists where three live phases reach the socket, which at a house they do not. A 22 kW cable earns its price at a workplace, where a 65.4 kWh Kona finishes in about 7 hours rather than 10.

Avoid the 16A unless the Kona is a low mileage second car. Held to 3.7 kW, a 64 kWh first generation car needs 19 hours 30 minutes from empty instead of 10, and the range you recover drops from about 34 miles an hour to 17.

On length, the Kona is unusual: the charging flap is in the nose, behind the grille, not on a wing. Park nose in towards the wallbox and 5m is generous. Reverse onto the drive, as most people do, and the inlet ends up at the far end of the car, which is where 10m earns its money.

Other Hyundais have their own pages, including the Ioniq 5 and the Inster, and the full Hyundai charging cable range lists the rest. Built to IEC 62196-2, CE certified, IP55 sealed, rated from -30C to +50C, two year warranty and free next working day UK delivery.

    Hyundai Kona Electric Charging Times

2023 onwards, 65.4 kWh usable, up to 319 miles WLTP

Maximum onboard AC charging speed: 10.5 kW, three phase

Cable Type Max Charge Rate Empty to Full Range Added Per Hour Verdict
    Type 2 - 1-Phase, 16A (5m / 10m) 3.7 kW 20 hours approx. 18 miles Too slow for this battery
    Type 2 - 1-Phase, 32A (5m / 10m) 7.4 kW 10 hours approx. 36 miles Best fit at home
    Type 2 - 3-Phase, 32A (5m / 10m) 10.5 kW (car limited) 7 hours approx. 51 miles For 22kW posts and workplaces
    Type 2 to 3-Pin (5m / 10m) 2.3 kW 32 hours 15 mins approx. 11 miles Backup only

2018 to 2023, 64 kWh usable, up to 300 miles WLTP

Maximum onboard AC charging speed: 7.2 kW, single phase

Cable Type Max Charge Rate Empty to Full Range Added Per Hour Verdict
    Type 2 - 1-Phase, 16A (5m / 10m) 3.7 kW 19 hours 30 mins approx. 17 miles Too slow for this battery
    Type 2 - 1-Phase, 32A (5m / 10m) 7.2 kW (car limited) 10 hours approx. 34 miles Best fit at home
    Type 2 - 3-Phase, 32A (5m / 10m) 7.2 kW (car limited) 10 hours approx. 34 miles No gain, the charger is single phase
    Type 2 to 3-Pin (5m / 10m) 2.3 kW 31 hours 30 mins approx. 11 miles Backup only

The 48.4 kWh second generation car and the 39 kWh first generation car charge at the same rates, they simply finish sooner. Cold weather and motorway speeds reduce the miles per hour figure.

    Hyundai Kona Charging Cable FAQs

Does a Hyundai Kona Hybrid need a charging cable?

No. The Hyundai Kona Hybrid has no charging socket anywhere on the car and charges its own small battery from the engine and from braking. Only the Kona Electric plugs in, and no Kona plug-in hybrid has ever been sold in the UK.

Which cable does a Hyundai Kona Electric need?

The 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable, on either generation. It delivers the full 7.4 kW a British home supply can give, which is more than the 7.2 kW a 2018 to 2023 Kona will take and all a 2023 onwards car can use at a house.

Did the Kona Electric get a faster charger?

Yes. The first generation Kona Electric, 2018 to 2023, has a 7.2 kW single phase onboard charger. The second generation, from 2023, has a 10.5 kW three phase unit. The cable you buy is the same, but only the newer car can use more than 7.4 kW, and only where three phase power is available.

Will a 22kW cable charge a Hyundai Kona faster?

Only a second generation car, and only at a genuine three phase supply, where it takes a 65.4 kWh Kona from empty to full in about 7 hours instead of 10. On a first generation Kona it achieves nothing anywhere, because that charger is single phase. At a British house both cables deliver the same 7.4 kW.

What length cable does a Hyundai Kona need?

The Kona's charging flap is in the nose behind the grille, so measure from the wallbox to the front of the car as you actually park. 5m suits nosing in towards the unit. 10m is the safer choice if you reverse onto the drive or the wallbox is on the far side.
