    Description

Order a Type 1 to Type 2 cable for the Peugeot iOn, and order the 16A one. The car cannot draw more than a 16A lead already gives it, so on this model the cheaper cable is also the correct cable.

The iOn is one of a small handful of cars we list that will turn away an ordinary Type 2 to Type 2 lead. Its AC inlet is Type 1: five pins in a round housing with a latch on top. Type 2, the socket on nearly every EV built since the middle of the last decade, has seven pins and a flat upper edge. The two shapes are not interchangeable and no adaptor makes them so. Look at your own inlet before you order. If you count five pins, you are on the right page.

Peugeot never fitted this car with a big onboard charger. Published figures sit between 3.3 kW and 3.7 kW depending on the source, so treat 3.7 kW as the optimistic ceiling. A 16A cable supplies exactly that. A 32A cable is rated at 7.4 kW, but the car throttles the supply down to its own limit, so the same 14.5 kWh goes in over the same number of hours. We stock the 32A version because it fits and some owners prefer the heavier lead, not because it is any quicker here.

The 3 pin cable earns more respect on the iOn than it does on a big saloon. At 2.3 kW it refills the whole 14.5 kWh pack in a little over seven hours. That is a night on a domestic socket, not a roadside emergency measure. If your trips are short and you park beside a garage socket, it can reasonably be the only cable you own.

Nothing changed for charging across the production run. Early cars from 2011 to 2016 and the later ones sold up to 2020 share the same usable pack, the same Type 1 inlet and the same modest onboard charger. The Citroen C-Zero and the Mitsubishi i-MiEV are the same vehicle wearing different badges, so a cable bought here suits all three.

The iOn also carries a CHAdeMO port for rapid charging. That is a DC connection and the charge point supplies its own attached lead, so it has no bearing on what you buy here.

    Peugeot iOn Charging Times

Cable Type Max Charge Rate Empty to Full Verdict
Type 1 to 3 Pin, 2.3 kW: 5m or 10m 2.3 kW 7h15m A genuine overnight charge on this battery
    Type 1 to Type 2, 16A: 5m or 10m 3.7 kW 4h30m Best fit. Matches the car's own ceiling
Type 1 to Type 2, 32A: 5m or 10m 7.4 kW cable, held to 3.7 kW by the car 4h30m Fits and works, but buys you no extra speed

Type 1 to Type 2 cables are IP55 rated. Type 1 to 3 Pin cables are IP67. All are CE certified and come with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty and free next working day UK delivery.

    Peugeot iOn Charging Cable FAQs

Which charging cable does the Peugeot iOn need?

A Type 1 to Type 2 cable. The iOn has a five pin Type 1 inlet, so the Type 2 to Type 2 lead most EV owners buy will not physically fit it. The 16A version at 3.7 kW covers everything the car's onboard charger can accept, and refills the 14.5 kWh pack in about four and a half hours.

Is the 32A cable worth paying more for?

Not for speed. The 32A lead carries 7.4 kW, but the iOn accepts somewhere between 3.3 kW and 3.7 kW and simply asks for less. Empty to full stays at roughly four and a half hours either way. Buy it if you want the thicker cable or a car that may follow, not for shorter charges.

How long does a full charge take?

About four and a half hours on a 16A Type 1 cable, which is the car's own limit on any home or public AC point. A 3 pin cable at 2.3 kW takes a little over seven hours for the same 14.5 kWh. Partial charges scale down from there, so a half empty battery needs roughly half the time.

Can I use an adaptor with a Type 2 to Type 2 cable?

We would not advise it. Type 1 and Type 2 differ in pin count and housing shape, and adaptors introduce a joint that carries current outdoors in British weather. A Type 1 to Type 2 cable made as one piece is the safer purchase and costs about the same. Order the correct cable and skip the adaptor.

Is a 3 pin cable enough on its own?

On this car it can be. The 14.5 kWh pack takes just over seven hours at 2.3 kW, so plugging in at bedtime gives you a full battery by morning. Owners doing short local runs often manage on nothing else. It is slower than the 16A lead, but on a battery this size that gap matters less.

Should I buy the 5m or the 10m length?

Five metres is enough when the iOn parks nose in beside a wallbox on the same wall. Choose ten metres if you park on the street, reverse onto the drive, or share a charge post where the socket sits some way from your bay. The extra length costs a little more and never hurts.
